Later, the surgeons also start a brothel where rich patrons can indulge their sick fancies, often at the expense of the inmate's life. ![]() To raise funds, the annual Ophelia Gallery, an exhibition of Asylum inmates takes place in the spring. In spite of this, the medical and general staff alike administer treatments that are cruel, outdated and objectionable even by the standards of 1845. Its dilapidated brickwork and lack of a proper foundation makes Emily remark that it is doubtful if the building was intended for use as a medical facility, and certainly not by a sizable population such as the one it currently homes. Then they all commit mass suicide as the Asylum which they turned into their home collapses around them.It is unknown when the Asylum was built and by whom. Emily's story is spent building up to the moment when they will eliminate the doctors and run the Asylum. "Shaggy Dog" Story: Used to highlight the pointlessness and chaos of Victorian women's lives, particularly the "mad" ones.Most of the Asylum girls are only referred to by their first name. Mad Scientist: Doctor Stockill who is attempting to create a new strain of the bubonic plague that only he can cure.until it turns out that the photographs he's taking are meant to be used (against his will) to advertise the Asylum girls as prostitutes. Hope Spot: With the arrival of Thomson the photographer, it appears that Emily may have finally found a sympathetic outsider.Four-Girl Ensemble: Jolie Rouge is the girl so broken she chooses to live in her own fantasy, Emily is the "mannish," clever, artistic one, Veronica is the sexy, glamorous one (though this is deconstructed,) and Anne is sort of a mother figure. ![]()
